Shoppers More Likely to Increase Apparel Purchases Online than In-store in 2024
Asked how they expect their apparel purchases to change over the next year, 30% expect to buy more apparel products online, compared to 24% who expect to buy more in physical stores. About half of respondents said both their online and offline apparel purchases would remain about the same. However, the number of respondents who expect to buy more apparel products online over the next year was higher than the number who expect to buy less - the opposite was true for physical store apparel purchases.

Among households earning $200K or more per year, 29% said they would buy more apparel products than the previous year, while just 12% said less. For households earning less than $50K a year, those rates were 23% and 20%.
While a wide swath of consumers say that inflation continues to affect how they shop for apparel, 24% of shoppers in households earning $200K or more said that inflation hadn’t affected their apparel shopping in the past year, compared to just 15% of shoppers in households earning less than $50K per year.

For consumers looking to save money while enjoying a broad array of wardrobe options, online clothing rental services have become an attractive option. Although just 19% of respondents have rented clothing from a service like Rent the Runway, Nuuly or Taelor, among those who have, nearly two-thirds of respondents said they would continue to do so at least as much as they did over the past year.
